How often does a 10 day old baby nurse? How long should he/she be nursing at one feed?

I am wondering how often generally a 10 day old would nurse and how long she or he usually nurses at one time. My daughter used to nurse like every 2.5-3 hours and one feed averages for about 15-20 minutes. Starting today, she is nursing very frequently (cries for it) and feeds for a long time. She cries if I try to stop her. She also spits up (vomits) afterwards a little bit. Does this show she is under distress? Should I be concerned?

best thing to do is to feed on demand. Not on a schedule. If you feed on a schedule it can diminish your supply- especially for the first few months. Every baby is different. There isn’t an exact normal for everyone. Some babies eat quickly, others graze. My son as a newborn ate every 2 hours (his schedule- not mine) and ate for about a half hour each feeding, give or take.

You have to remember that babies breastfeed for COMFORT as well. The vomiting may be due to overeating- but that doesn’t necessarily mean you shouldn’t keep feeding her for comfort It’s up to you. When my baby was small, if he spit up, I tried to make sure nothing else was bothering him (dirty diaper, gas, etc). If nothing else helped I just let him nurse again to calm him down. If you just leave her attached and don’t try to break her off- it will comfort her and she won’t be getting much milk after the initial let down. If she wants more milk- you will let down again. Sometimes my son nurses and doesn’t ever let my milk down- he just wants a comfort feed. I’m still nursing him and he’s 15 months old now.

THe vomitting could also be due to something in YOUR diet that isn’t agreeing with her. When my son was an infant, if I ate or drank anything chocolaty, my son got severe gas. So I had to cut that out. Other things that are common to avoid are broccoli and dairy products and nuts.

Keep in mind babies also go through growth spurts. She may be super hungry. The more she nurses, the more it stimulates your body to produce more milk. Her body will be undergoing radical growth in the next few months. But as a newborn, her stomach is the size of a marble. She can’t eat a whole lot at a time. However, eating often from you will help your body make enough gradually over time to finally be able to keep up with her appetite over the next few months when she grows and can hold more milk at a time.

Its very hard with newborns. Its hard to read them. Its a brand new relationship. Bottom-line, its better to nurse and make sure you have enough supply in the future so you can keep breastfeeding, and also to comfort your baby as long periods of crying can cause increased blood pressure and increased levels of cortisol in the body, in severe cases brain damage and vomitting. Feeding always helped my son feel better, even if he just had a full meal.

Also- is the vomitting due to eating or is it after she has been crying for a while? Crying for a while can cause it, so try to figure out which it is.

One thing that always helped my son feel better at that age was walking him. He liked the motion. If your baby likes this, too, you might want to invest in a Baby Ring-style sling. They are awesome for this.
